About Feral Glass

Feral Glass garden sculptures are the creation of John Byrne, a self taught “outsider artist”. I have a small studio in the folds of the Blue Ridge Mountains in a very rural area of central Virginia. My view includes a ridgeline that the Appalachian Trail follows.
I began to make outdoor glass sculptures in order to make the most of all my sunlight in the Winter. I enjoy putting art in unexpected places. Yard art adds something to my line of sight whatever the season, Feral Glass adds Color and Form to my view all year round.
Alexander Calder said he developed Mobiles in order to allow Nature to be a co-creator with the Artist. When I made my outdoor panels I faced a similar choice.
I could either make a panel like a fortress, fighting the wind. Or I could develop my art so that it co-exists with Nature, and is one with the elements.
I spent about three years experimenting and field testing different ideas for outdoor glass before selling my first piece. Since then, Feral Glass has migrated to over 30 states, Canada and Great Britain.
If you want to know how these pieces survive the wind and rain, or how I developed my art, please read my blog. Read about my experiments with glass kites and other outdoor panels at http://feralglass.blogspot.com or click on the blog button on the home page.
I do custom work and will design a panel to fit your space, either indoors or out. Fill out the Request Custom Order form here on the site or click on the Contact Us button to send me an email.
I ship using Priority Mail, with insurance and delivery confirmation. Let me know if it is a gift and I can include a personalized note from you on my letterhead.
